PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
CHAMBER. OF COMMERCE ANNUAL MEETING. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, December 13. Tlio annual meeting of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, Captain Haydon (president) being in the chair. The report stated that during the,year much had been done in assisting to develop the business of the district. The balance-sheet, however, was not so satisfactory, there being a small debit. Correspondence was read from the Railway .Department declining to establish electric bells at the crossings in the Square, on the ground that such bells were apt to fail, and, if the public reiiqd on them, thc-re was danger of an accident occurring. The Department also declined to light the Terrace End Railway Station. Mr. J. MV Johnston criticised the state of the Palmerston Railway Station —it was just a piece of patchwork, and he would advise the Minister for Railways to bring along something to disinfect it. Other members spoke strongly on the inadequacy of the staff at the station, stating that there was a certain danger of accidents on this account. Several other matters, including the installation of electric trams, were discussed. The following council was elected:— Messrs. H. Haydon, J. M. Johnston, J. Wallace, SI. A. Eliott. G. H. Bennett, G. W. Harden, T. R. Eodder, R. Jl'Nab, W. Devine, H. P. Gibbons, R. Gardener, and 11. Cohen. At a subsequent meeting of tho council, Captain Haydon was reelected president. Mr. 11. A. Eliott vicepresident, and Mr. J. A, Nash treasurer, llessrs. G. J. Scott and R. Davis were appointed auditors. Mr. E. 0. Hurley and Captain Preece were elected associate members of the council.
A irast office has baen opened at Poxton Heads.' This, of course, will prove a great convenience to people visiting the beach, especially, during the summer. At last night's meeting of the Palraerston Chamber of Commerce, the chairman. Captain Haydon, gave statistics of the building trade in Palmerston during the past year. 1 During that time 47 houses had been erected of the value AT/,042; 14 shops and warehouses, value <£19,259; and 93 additions, value ,£9BB, making a total of .£36,129. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Y.M.C'.A. was held in Palmerston lust night. Mr. J. Wallace in the chaiv. Mr. H. N. Holmes, secretary of the Wellington branch, addressed the meeting, giving all particulars of the r.ims and objects of the association. After considerable discussion the meeting formed itself into an executive to test the feeling of the town r.n the question of contributing to necessary funds to start a branch association here.
