The I-lon. R. M'Kenzie (Minister for Mines) expects to leave Wellington on a visit to his constituency (Motueka) next week. Among tho 'passengers for the north yesterday were several 'members of Sir Joseph Ward's family, together with Mr. J. Hislop (private secretary), who will join the Prime Minister and Lady Ward at Rotorua, where they will ail spend the Christmas holidays. Bishop Clearv, of Auckland,' is a passenger by tho steamer Omrali, which arrived .it Fremantle on Tuesday from London. . Mr. Robert. E. Hayes, Registrar of Friendly Societies, has been appointed superintendent of tho National Provident Fund Board. Mr. Hayes, who is a popular member of the Civil Service, was prior to taking up his present duties accountant for the Tourist and Industries and C'omincrco Departments. Tho Rev. J. C. Fitzgerald and the last party of Anglican missioners who havo been conducting missions throughout N'ow Zealand leave for England to-day. It is pleasing to know tlmt, notwithstanding the constant strain of their very responsible work, in which they havo not scared themselves, they are all in excellent health, and -.Tieak very highly of New Zealand and its climate, and of tho kindness of tho people from ono end of the Dominion to the other. News has been received 1 in Christchurch of tlio death in Adelaide of Mr. T. Gluyas Pascoe at the age of seventy-one vears. Mr. Pascoo was the founder and first mnnnger of the Kaiapoi Clothing Factory, and was well known in Christchurch for inanyyears-
Mr. H. MTarlane, of the A.M.P. Wellington staff, leaves on a trip to England early next year. Mr. MTarlane, who is well known in musical circles, being a member of the Savage Club, and the Wellington Professional Orchestra, will be attached to tho London office of the society when in London. He will return via America about fifteen months hence.
Air. A. W. Lilly, for twenty years connected with tho choir of St. Matthew's Church, Duncdin, has been appointed organist at All Saints' Church in the same city. Mr. S. T. Harrison, secretary of tho Sydney Wharf Labourers' Union,. is at present spending a holiday with relatives at Ngaio. Mr.' Harrison was a member of tho strike committee associated with Messrs. Peter Bowling and W. M. Hughes at the time of the New South Wales strike last year. Mr. Rix-Trott, late engineer for the Hutt Borough Council, returned from a trip to Sydney by the l ; limaroa yesterday. Mr. William Miller, of Gisborne, is a visitor to Wellington. -Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., lias received a cable message from Mr. Hodge, the English Labour M.P., at Sydney, stating thai he .(Mr. Hodge) intends to leave for Wellington on Saturday and will arrive here on Wednesday -next. Madame Wielaert, who is to sing the soprano solos in "The Messiah" for the Choral Society to-morrow evening, has left Auckland for Wellington. Mr. Lysnar, Mayor of Gisborne, who returned- to Gisborne from England yesterday, received a public welcome, being met on landing by a large crowd, with a band. He was escorted to the Victoria belfry, where congratulatory speeches were made. /Mr. Lysnar mentioned that lie had brought back a contract signed by the Edison Storage Battery Company for municipal trams; also Mr. Edison's guarantee, and, if the council approve, the installation would be gone on with immediately.—Press Association.
Dr. and Mrs. Evans, of Christchurch, were passengers by - the .Ulimaroa, which arrived from Sydney yesterday. Mr. Wni. Coulls, of Coulls, Culling and Co., who has been visiting the Old Country, was a passenger from Sydney by the Ulimaroa yesterday. On Saturday the employees of the Dresden Piano Company in Christchurch made A presentation" to Air. A. F. Bobertshaw, who has been acting-manager during Mr. Home's absence in England, Mr. Home having again taken up his managerial duties' in that city. The presentation took the form of a very handsome salad bowl and accessories. Mr. Leslie Bull, postmaster at Tuparoa, who has been transferred to the new post office at Prankton Junction, has just taken up his new duties there. At a conversazione to be given by the directors of the Y.iI.C.A. on Monday evening next, the retiring president, Mr. <T. G. W. Aitken, will receive a presentation, and a welcome will be accorded to the new president, Mr. E. Balcombe Brov.'n. Mr. ~T. M. Brigham, for thirty-nine years secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board, died 'suddenly at his residence, Auckland, yesterday . afternoon.—Press Association. Captain C. Milward will leave for London by tho Ru'apehu to-day. Mr. H. T. B. Drew, formerly of The Doiiixion literary stall', who has been on a two years' sojourn abroad, returned to Wellington by the Ulimaroa yesterday. . ' The Hon. Dr. Findlay had a busy time during his brief stay in Wanganui. He was engaged at tho Supreme-Court most of Tuesday and presided at the Collegiate School prize-giving in the evening. . Yesterday morning he attended to various Departmental matters and received a denntation. The Minister left yesterday afternoon for Auckland. Commander Orme-Webb, 8.N., •of England, who is n brother, of. Colonel Webb, of Nelson, was among the passengers by the Ulimaroa from Sydney/yesterday. He will remain in New Zealand until March.. Mr. W. X. Fiaveli;' manager of the Westport' Coal Company's Wellington branch, is expected to return from Dunedin by the Maori to-morrow morning.
