There had been a substantial increase in income, while the expenditure, notwithstanding special "circumstances affecting the year's operations, had been very little in excess of the cost of working for the previous twelve months.. Ho was pleased to be : ablo to say,' for. the further-information of shareholders,' that for the two months' working since - the close of the financial year there had been an excess of income over expenditure, that marked tho turn of tho tide.. .To the editor, manager, and staff a great, deal of credit was duo, and he was - 6ure shareholders' would endorse thoir directors' appreciation of those efforts which, from ono and all,' had beenconsistently directed towards the success of the company.. . Mr. J..Duthie seconded 1 the motion. He felt. that - shareholders .would recognise that in. face of considcrablo difficulties they had reached. a position" that. they could view with'.satisfaction.; But for certain unexpected contingencies which arose during tho year—railway time-table changes, etc.—which involved tho necessity for a temporarily, increased cxpend.i- ---' ture, the year's working would lfave shown to' still' greater advdntage. One of tho. most satisfactory. features disclosed was tho .firm hold, the paper had secured both in' tho matter of business and circulation, as well as in'popular esteem. Jt was noteworthy, also that their latest returns, those for tho month just ended, showed the. best financial results of. any month since the foundation of tho. paper. Mr. Duthie commented on : the' independence and outspokenness of the paper, which adhered to its own policy Regardless of'.political parties, an attitude which, judged by the support accorded it, was well 'appreciated by the public. ' . ■ 'The balance-sheet was adopted without, further discussion. Messrs. J. Duthie and A. L. Herd man .were re-elected' directors, and. Mr. Leary ■was re-elected auditor. .. . : , ■ Oh the motion of,-.Mr,„Mo.ore, .'a. vote of thanks-and appreciation" was' passed''to i the; staff, the editor, Mr... C. Earle, responding. '. - T: .
