Mr. Justice Williams gave judgment this morning in re the Andrews bequest to the Volunteers, holding that its destination was not affected by the transference -of the Volunteers to the Territorials, the latter being voluntary, but when the compulsory principle ■ under section 23 becomes operative the bequest will pass to the Dunedin Corporation. METHODIST HOSTILITY. TO LEGALISED LIQUOR. Auckland, December 9. The Methodist District Synod passed a resolution of uncompromising hostility to the' legalised sale of intoxicating drink, and demanding for the people the right to settler the question, by a bare majority; rejoicing in the improvements secured in the new Licensing Act, particularly in regard to the enforcement of the law in No-License ; areas, the raising of the-age at'which youths can" be supplied, and the provision for a separate vote on nations/ prohibition.- ■ CYCLONIC DISTURBANCE. Palmerston N., December 9. ■Terrace End was visited by a cyclonio disturbance at noon that lifted the iron roof off Pittam's stables, took it from lo to 20 feet m the air, carried it 200 yards and deposited it in a paddock • ' levelled a wire fence, tearing up the posts and wrenching the wire from the staples and almost completely demolished the verandah of a -house occupied by Mrs. Kelly and family. No one was injured. BICYCLE SHOP BURNT. Dunedin, December 9. Bell' Brothers' bicycle shop at Bal. clutha was completely destroyed by fire.' Clsbarna, December 9. - During a thunderstorm of brief duration last evening a chimney of the Girls College at Kaiti was struck by lightning, and cracked from top to bottom. A large macrocarpa tree .at Whataupoko was stripped of its bark and set' alight. Thunder occurred again at midday to-day, with a - heavy hailstorm at Ormond, where- the hail lay ' fully an inch deep. . • THUNDEROUS HAILSTORM., Fcildlng, December 9. There was a thunderous hailstorm in Feilding early this morning over the central portion of the town, with' rain'. on the outskirts. Intermittent showers fell later, and the Tain will do a. great, deal of good. There was a severe thunderstorm at noon, with'very' heavy rain.- - HEAVY FIRE LOSS. Blenheim, December 8. At i o'clock this morning a shop in Alfred Street, owned by Levin and Co., and occupied by E. H. Best, cycle dealij:, was gutted by fire, The only thing ■ saved was a motor-bicycle. There were half a dozen stags' heads belonging to local sportsmen in the window, and these wore all lost. Best is a heavy ' loser, ,having ■ only £100 on. his stock m the Royal office.
