FEDERAL REFERENDUM OBJECTEp TO. SOME POLICY MEASURES. By TcleffrapU—Press Association-Copyrizht ■ Sydney, December 9. In the State Assembly during the Financial Debate the Oppositionists attacked the Federal Government's referenda proposals. Mr. 'Waddell, .ex-treasurer,, described. the proposals as infamous, and said the people voting for them would live to regret it. The Federal Government had bunched four proposals together, compelling the people to vote ''Yes" or "No" for the lot, because it knew that one or more were rotteu, and would not stand on their merits. Mr. Wade spoke for two hours, chiefly -upholding State rights. Tho' Minister for Works described Mr. Wade's statement as a rhapsody of nonsense, but expressed no opinion on the referenda. Mr. M'Gowen, however, has telegraphed to Mr. Hughes asking for information on tho matter, as the Government is pressed on all sides for a pronouncement. Mr. M'Gowen states that the session's business will include the passing of electoral Teform and the Estimates. New regulations are to be tabled providing for free education in the high schools, and district scholarships are to bo. established. ■ . Tho Government intends .holding an inquiry into the Killingworth mine explosion. Tho Minister for Works (Mr. Griffiths) states that his predecessor had committed the-Public! Works Fund to an expenditure of £961,000, hut owing to the -condition of the finances, he would bo compelled to reduco it to £383,000.
