His Excellency "left "Highden," Mrs. Walter Johnston's residence, nine miles beyond Palmerston North, in 'his motcr-car at half-past eight yesterday morning, and arrived in Wellington at half-past one yesterday afternoon —a good performance. . . His Excellency the Governor and Lady Islington will give their first official reception in Wellington at Government House this evening. Mr. It. B. Vincent, Assistant-Secre-tary and Accountant to the Treasury, who has not been enjoying good health for some time past, is retiring from the public sorvico on superannuation. Mr. Vincent has been in the Treasury Department for. thirty-seven years. He will be succeeded by Mr. , E. L. Mowbray, and Mr. A. 0. Gibhes, first clerk in the accountants' branch, will take the position of chief clerk in the Treasury. Mr. A. Morgan will take the position vacated by. Mr." Gibbes. The Eev. Father O'Dwyer; who was in charge of the Stratford parish during Father Tracy's ■ absence in tho Old Country, has been presented with an illuminated address and a purso of sovereigns. The ttev. Father Tracoy was also the. recipient of an illuminated address. Canons Stuart, Ivens, and Carey and tho Rev. Messrs. Horan and De Carteret were passengers to Sydney by the Moeraki last, night. The death is announced of Mr. Thomas H. Davidson, engineer, who was for some years in the Union Company's service. Deceased, who was born at Belfast, was 66 years of age,' and had been in the Dominion for the past forty years. He loaves a family of two sous and three daughters. Mr. L. B. Wilson, chief clerk in tho Lands Branch of the Railways Depart; ment, has been appointed a judge of tho Native Land Court. Mr. Wilson, wlio is a son of the late- Major Wilson, of Waikato, is a qualified solicitor, and has a knowledge of Maori law and customs. *
Mr. G. J. Aickin, late stationmaster at the Lambton Station, Wellington, with his wife and family, left by yesterday's Main Trunk.express ior Auckland, where they intend to take up their residence.
Our ' Wanganui correspondent states that Mrs. Boyd, of Christ's College, Christcburch, has been selected as the now matron of the Wanganui Girls' College.
On Thursday evening the Wanganui Education Board accepted the resignation of Mr. E. Mossman, headmaster of the District High School, who is retiring on superannuation. The hoard also passed a resolution appreciatiye of Mr. Mossman's services., extending over many years, and expressing tho hope that he may be loDg spared to enjoy his well-earned retirement.
Mr. Haselden, S.M., who is relieving Mr. Kerr as Magistrate at Wanganui, is proceeding south to-daj; to preside at the sittings of the Railway Appeal Board at Christchurch* and Invcrcargill.
A pleasing ceremony took place at the Gear Company Works, Petone, on Thursday evening, when Mr. H. Cook, chief clerk in the Stcck Department of that company, was given a send-off. Mr. Cook has been in the company's service for a period of twenty-two years, and is now leaving to follow farming pursuits. The feature of the send-off was a presentation from the employees of a purse of sovereigns. _ Mr. E. C. Corner made the presentation, and his remarks regarding the recipient, were endorsed by Messrs. Castle, Carter, and Burd.
Master John Hally, a pupil of the Marist Brothers' School, Boulcott Street, has won this year's scholarship for. the Sacred Heart College, Auckland. This scholarship is open to boys throughout the Dominion under fourteen years.
Superintendent O'Brien, of the Fire Brigade, left by the Moeraki last evening for , Sydney, en route for Melbourne, having received a cablegram informing him of his mother's death. His father is an ex-superintendent of tho Melbourne Fire Brigade. . .
Mr.' Charles Gilbert, the well-known French baritone, died suddenly in NewYork on October 12. Puccini had written a special part for him in his latest opera "The Girl of the Golden West."
Mr. George Majeroni, an actor well--known in New Zealand, is acting the part of Sugar in the .notable New Theatre production of "The Blue Bird" (Maeterlinck) in New York.
