NOTES FROM HASTINGS.
« There has been a miniature strike here. Workmen engaged in the sower works were put on piecework, and, before starting operations, a test was taken, and the engineer was apparently satisfied that tho men could.earn from 10s. to 12s. on tho basis arranged. However, after the first gang had been at work some time, they decided that tho rate did hot suit, and wished to be paid by the day. New men have been put on, and the engineer expects to have 100 men on the work before long. The Chamber of Commerce has some important matters down for consideration at its next meeting, on Monday. One is a proposal that New Zealand should assist in an • Imperial scheme to raise ,£100,000,000 for the British Navy. Mr. George Nelson will also give an"address on the Waikaremoana power project. Captain Colebournc, of tho Hawkc's Bay Mounted Rifles, was .welcomed back after his trip to England, at a smoke concert on Wednesday evening. Advantage was taken of Hie same occasion to present Lieutenant. Chambers with' a smoker's cabinet, in honour of Ms approaching marriage. About sixty members were present, including Colonel. Russell (chairman), Major Sandtmanii, also Captain Holderness and Lieutenant Daly, and Sergeant Ross, of the Hastings Rifles! A most enjoyable evening was spent. A very successful sale of work was held in St. Andrew's Hall this week, in aid of 'the Classroom Fund. The various stalls were artisricall yarranged, and the usual competitions produced abundant .interest
