KILLINGWORTH EXPLOSION.

WORKMAN'S NARROW ESCAPE. By Telecraph-Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, December 8. ' There was'nobody-in the Killingwdrth mine, Newcastle, at the time of the explosion yesterday. A man working at the pit mouth had a narrow escape. He was blown off his feet, but scrambled-out of danger. There is an immense quantity of broken machinery. Tho hauling ropes were driven right up, and practically black the shaft. The adjoinng pit shaft was damaged. . Killingworth had been idle for eight weeks. Daily examinations of the working were made, and the fans were kept going. The" last examination was an hour and a half before tho explosion. Everything was then apparently right. It is presumed the explosion caused a fall of the roof in the bricked-off portion of the workings. The sealing of the pit is proceeding. Several men engaged on tho work were slightly affected by afterdamp. It will not be possible to ascertain tho full extent .of the damage, or even to know if the colliery is on fire, till the mine is re-opened,
