PALMERSTON NOTES.

(From Our- Special Correspondent.) , Palmerston, December 7. ' At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, a motion was • carried to put a proposal to the ratepayers to raise a loan of ,£GB,OOO to instal electric trams in Palmerston, tho amount being based on an estimated cost of <£9000 per. mile, as stated by. Press Association messago yesterday. The majority of the couiicil are against the scheme, and the motion was only carried on tho assurance of the Mayor that the poll would not be allowed to , clash , with proposals to provide mechanical filters for the .water supply and the raising of tho dam, so as to give greater storage capacity at the intake. There has been much agitation on this question of electric .trams, but it is doubtful if the proposal will bo carried. The poll on tho question of the filters and the raising of tho dam will be held in February, and that on the train question in March.. . . Mr. F. J. Chisholm, for many years chief clerk in the Palmerston' Post .Office, has been transferred to the chief office at, Auckland. There will be greatregret among a very large circle of friends and also among tho business men of tho town at Mr. Chisholm's departure, though they will, of course; bo pleased to hear of his promotion. In musical circles especially, he will. be greatly missed. He was one. of those instrumental in inaugurating tho Orchestral Society, which has proved. so successful, and for years has played first violin in it, and also conducted the Broad Street Methodist Church choir. When Mr. Chisholm joined the Palmerston Post Office nineteen years ago, the staff numbered ten—now it is nearly one hundred—and Mr,. Chisholm was the only one left out of the original ten. ' At last night's meeting of the Borough Council,' tho salary of the curator was raised from .£175 to .£2OO. The council is apparently of opinion that, in Mr. Black, it has a servant of exceptional ability, and the increased salary is to show . their ■ appreciation, as he had not .asked'for further' : remuneration. Mr. Black's work in-the Squares, the Esplanade, and other spots in the town speaks for itself. ' The annual meeting of the Palmerston branch of the W.C.T.TJ. was held last evening. The report showed that the finances were in a healthy state, and that the union was doing excellent work. The following officers were elected:— President, . Mrs. H. Mowlem;. vice-presi-dents, Mesdames T. E. Hodder and J. Whitehead; secretary, Mrs. F. M'Donald; treasurer, Mrs. Leybourne; assistant secretary, Miss Astbury j press Teporter, Miss Gilling; superintendents-of departments, Miss Ritchie (social purity), Mrs. Crabbe (scientific temperance instruction), Mrs. Collins (evangelistic), Mrs. Watson (anti-narcotics), Mrs. Hodges (cradle roll), Mrs. Hodder .(drawing-room meetings), Mrs. Allman (literature); Look-out Committee, Mesdames Nash and Griffen. Mr. J. M'Kewen, captain of the Kia Toa Football Club, was' entertained by a number of club-mates and presented -.with a' sovereign case prior to. his departure for Auckland. ' The annual presentation of prizes in connection, with .the Broad Street Methodist Sunday School toot place last pvening. The "report presented: showed that splendid . progress had been made during the year. A number of addresses were given, and a concert programriie rendered, which was much enjoyed by the large ■ number present.
