TECHNICAL INSTRU= TION.

A YEAR'S WORK.. PKESEXTATION OF 1-iJIZES. Prizes- earned by pupils at Hie Technical School during the past year were publicly presented in St. Peter's ■ Hall last evening, when there was a large attsndaiico of students and their friends. Mr. D. Eobei'tson (chairman of the Technical Education Board) presided, and with him on the platform were the Hon. D. Budilo (Acting-Minister for Education), the Hon. C. H. Mills, and Messrs. J. G. W. Aitken, D. M'Laren, M.P., T. tarniichael, and W. S. La Trode, director of the Technical School.

An apology for absence was received from his Excellency- the Governor. In a brief opening speech, Mr. Eobertson congratulated the successful students not only because they had won prises, but on account of the good work thev hart performed in doing so. He did not wish to discourage thoso who had failed to obtain prizes. In.his lifetime he had known a great many boys and girls who naa never been able to obtain prizes, and "ft *'?•?' Mr. Aitken referred- to the value and importance of intense application. • 4.1ways a great number of people were trving to take the first rung in the ladder iti •• 1 " e lowcr ru "S s v, 'ere crowded, ■Bul higher up there was any quautitv of room Thoi-e ~a s always room ut' the top tor those-who had worked " hard, suidied well,- and tried to do their best! ilus year Mr. La Trolre had been able to report that most of the students had done their work well. ' on the year's work at the school -alγ. W. S.la Trobe (director) remarked that, this was the fifth or sixth occasion on which they had met together at the end of the year for the presentation of prizes. During the whole intervening period the number of pupils, attending tin. school had steadily increased The total would have been much larger if the< school authorities had succeeded, as they had not yet done, in obtaining a new site and a*nev school for cai-rying on the work. .Good work fnpf «!T e , r \, be<m douc in spite of.the act that both appliances ...and-equip-' iiien were deficient. Two book prizes and one "commended" came to the Wellington Technical School out of four awards that camo to New Zealand The school.examinations'had been conducted on-a.'wider. , basis this year, both iu day and evening classes, and throughout tho year over 600 certificates for proficiency in various departments had been earned by students. After reviewing at eomo lengrh the objects- of the school and the development of classes, Mr. La Trobe declared emphatically that tho institution was cramped for room, cramped for plant, and cramped for recreation grounds. •! now school was badly needed. When the s P c ?.f°, r . , S 3 W .. tho .'straits. ,tp which his pupils '■ were 'put.'diirJniF-'tho-'dinner hour and in.the evening to find space for recreation, he-felt that every effort'ought certainly to be made- to got> hold of a' site that would iucliido a. good'recreationgro.'uiul'. At present they, made., the best of things by a process of tinkering. Exist-.. ing accommodatipn had been'improved as tar as possible, and little alterations had been made. As a matter of fact, however, they had not space to put out equipment already obtained >eo .far as a number of classes were concerned. At the request of the chairman, the Hoii. D.
