' A SWOOP ON THE GREAT, BARRIER. .. - ' Auckland, December G. • An interesting ca«e of alleged smuggling has occupied the Auckland Customs officials for the past fortnight. The officers visited Whangaparapara, a small port on the Great Barrier on November 25, and boarded the Melbourne Stcnm Ship Company's • Brisbane. They found, it is alleged, that one side of a locker which had been scaled up by the Customs officials at Lyttelton had been broken, and certain un-customed goods removed. A search discovered eight bottles of whisky and. seven of gin concealed about the ship, and it is alleged that a quantity of tobacco had also been removed from the locker. The' master of the Brisbane and tho steward will bo charged to-day with breaches of the Customs Act, the first charge being that certain goods, upon which the Custonft seal had been placed, were secretly conveyed away, and the rest having reference to the concealing of the .whisky and gin. Both officers are charged with this offence. The maximum penalty in each case is .£IOO.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR LOAN. DEBENTURES .FOR ,£IOO,OOO. ; Auckland, December 6. The following resolution of the Finance and.Legal .Committee of the • Harbour Board was submitted to the-board this afternoon: "That the offer to purchase .£IOO,OOO of debentures upon the ■ terms mentioned' in a letter from the Australian Mutual Provident Society of Wellington dated November 24, 1910, .be accepted," and "that debentures of ,£IOOO each for the sum of .£IOO,OOO be printed." The chairman (Sir. A. J. Entrican) in-mov-ing the adoption of tho report, said that the board. had secured ,£IOO,OOO at four per cent and practically at par. He considered that the board were to be congratulated on the matter. The report was adopted.

FIRE PLANT FOR WANGANUI. .Wanganui, December G. The Wanganui Volunteer Fire Brigade to-day received" from Merryireather' aiid Sons, London, a new motor fire reel. The cost is very near JCIOOO. . The new engine combines a 42-horse-power motor, with a -chemical fire extinguishing apparatus, hose, and ladders. In addition to a cylinder, containing 35 gallons -of guishing liquid, there are two small portable extinguishers. The reel will carry 1000 feet of hose, but more can be stowed elsewhere. The ladders, are. 30ft.- long, and'are carried overhead:. Everything! is fitted out most conveniently,' and thoroughly well made. The machine is tho first to be imported ;into the Dominion.

THE GORE A. AND P. SHOW. Gore,- December 6. The Gore A. and P. Annual Show onened to-day in splendid weather: The judging 1 to-day was confined to'cattle, sheep, and pigs. The exhibition of cattle, especially of shorthorns and crossbreds, was tho best seen here for many years. Mr. Hugh ■M'lntyrc (Benion) gained most points in* crossbreds. Mr. A. Aitken, of Gore, exhibited the champion bull. In Ayrshires. Mr. John Campbell, of Waikiwi, gained most points and exhibited the champion cow. In the. Shorthorn classes, Mr. E K. Baird (Gore) had the champion bull, and Mr. D. Murray the champion cow. Ihe entry of-sheep was large,-.and was considered a fine lot. Ladbrook and Sons (Charlton)' carried off the majority of- the prizes in v tho-.Komney Marsh classes,' Mr. G. P. Johnston (Gore) • in the Lincolns, and Mr.. A. Murdoch (Riversdale) .in Border Leicesters and English Leicesters. In pigs, Messrs. Brieo and Cox, of Christchurch,. practically swept: the board. The dairy produce was a feature of the show.

POLICE OFFICER COMMITTED. Greymouth, December G.' .:..Constable, .'White, of Otira, was committed .'for' .'trial ' this morning.: after a lengthy .hearing, on. a charge of. perjury, committed in-the Grey Magistrate's.Court on November 21, when giving. evidence against.Denis Moynihan, of tho Otira Accommodation House, for alleged breach of the Licensing Act, which was dismissed.' Mr. M. Hanan prosecuted on a private information, and Mr. Beare, Hokitika; defended. It was stated that next week's session of the Supreme Court would be too early for accused to collect evidence to contradict the' depositions talcen, and tho defence'will-appeal to the Judge to adjourn.the case till a later session. Bail was granted—accused in .£SO, and two sureties of iS2S .each. ■■

Palmerston at an estimated cost,of .£9OOO per mile. SHEEP STEALING ALLEGED. : Wairoa, December 6. : Hugh Marshall has been committed for trial on a second charge of sheep stealing. A third charge was withdrawn. Accused was admitted to bail, which was arranged. ....
