a. ■ [ THE GUMDIGGER AND THE HORSEMEN. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) Dargaville, December 6. Ino adjourned inquest into the circumstances attending . the death of Stephen I'rederick Parker, gumdigger, who died as tho result of injuries sustained in consequence of being knocked down by - a horse, was resumed last evening. The inquiry showed that'deceased and a mate had been drinking at Kaihu, and were walking home when three horsemen rodo past at a brisk canter. One of them, Harry Hockey by name, was unuble to pull up and his horso struck deceased, who foil on the hard metal of tlio road and sustained nn injury to his left temple. - The riders dismounted and attended deceased until ho was on his feet again. On the Sunday .morning he was discovered by the licenseo of tho Kaihu, Hotel, and attended to until next morning, when tho licensee got in telegraphic communication with the police. The injured man was,' brought to the hospital, but died a couple of hours after admission.
Tho Coroner returned a verdict that death was. duo to injuries, the result of being knocked down by a horse ridden by Harry Hockey. ■•_ -
It is understood the police will take further proceedings. DEATH WHILE OUT SHOOTING. '- Carterton, December G. Herman- Nitz, senior, aged about ■ CO, was found dead on tho hills at Tewharan. He w-ent shooting last night at five' o'clock, and, not returning, anxiety was felt, and a search party set out,'finding the body this morning. It is presumed the man died of heart failure. There are no.signs of any wound. ■ CYCLIST STRIKES 'A VAN. Christchurch, December 6. ' Peter Grenfell, -aged fifteen,, died in the hospital this morning as the result of injuries sustained in a street accident yesterday. •:-■ Grenfell was riding a ■ bicycle when' he collided with a grocer's van, the wheels of which passed over him! His parents reside at Addington.
KILLED ON A RAILWAY LINE.... Gore, December G. ■ Willie a light engine belonging to the Public Works Department was running through from the north for Waimahaka to-day, an unknown man was run into and .killed. Half an hour before he was seen reading some distance from the railway. The body was wedged under the cow-catcher. The deceased was short of stature and of middlo age..
