SUNDAY.THIRST NO SIN.D

A. CHURCH BEQUEST REFUSED.' By Telegraph—Press Association-Oopyright. (Eec. December G, 11.50 p.m.) Sydney, December 6. A deputation representing various toligious bodies asked tho Chief Secretary (Mr. M'Donnell) to rescind a minute allowing soft-drink shops to open on Sundays on the ground that it was necessary that every toiler should have one day's rest in seven. Mr. M'Donnell replied that he could not alter the.order. Ho believed in ono day's rest,' but in his opinion to be thirsty on Sunday was no sin. If tho shops were' closed there would bo no place for people to drink except at tho horse,' troughs and public fountains, which diseased persons might use. It was not desirable to make people carry waterbags through tho streets. If Parliament dealt with tho matter things would remain as they were.
