PRACTICAL SYMPATHY.

TOUCHING INCIDENT AT AN. . , INQUEST. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, December 6. A touching illustration of humane sympathy occurred at the inquest held yesterday on the body of ' John F. Schafier, a labourer, who was drowned by falling off the Queen Street Wharf on Saturday night. It being the deceased had left a widow and six young children totally unprovided for, the jurymen and witnesses, without .exception, pooled their fees, and, adding several half-crowns and shillings, handed the combined sum, some 375. 6d., to bergeant Eamsay to give to the, widow towards the support of herself and family. The Coroner. (Mr. Thomas Gresham) also generously added his fee (,£1 Is.) as.hu donation, and a further sum was collected bv Sergeant Bamsay,' with the re-. suit that £& ss. was handed to the widow. Mr W. B. Crandall, who had made a gallant attempt to rescue the deceased, ■ suggested that ,a public subscription.', should be got up. ~ ■.
