THE TIMBER INDUSTRY.

A NIGHT IN THE BTJSH. Messrs. Moore Bros., of .Tollnsonville,' are entering into an undertaking with Messrs Ellis and Burnaml, Ltd., of Hamilton, to have tho whole of the bush on 1000 aorcs of land at Manunui milled by the latter firm on a royalty basis. Moore Bros, also hold the rights over 6000 acres of bush, sawmill, and steel tramways developed by the Pungarninga Timber Company, which area and plant is now under lease on 'a royalty, basis to Messrs. G. Gardner and . Sons, of Haminu'i. The two blocks are estimated to contain one hundred million feet .of timber, and as each firm .will, cut from 2!- to 3 million feet per annum, it will take about ■ twenty years to' absorb ■ Moore Bros.', supply of timbei.

"While Mr. Burnand and his firm's bush surveyor, Mr. It. Taylor, were examining the •IUOD-acro block; in company with Mr P. T. Moore, on Thursday last,.they pursued their investigations to such a Into hour, that before they could recover their horses on the Maori track that • runs through the bush they were overtaken by darkness, and forced to stay all night in the forrest scantily clad and without any food. • In flie endeavour to find the horses the party got separated. At daylight Messrs.- Taylor and Moore abandoned Hie. search for the horses, getting out of the bush at 9 ajti., but Mr. Burnand, who is a more experienced bushman, recovered the mounts, arriving at the camp on the Pungapunga Stream at midday, just as a Maori was being dispatched to search for him and the horses. It is not an easy matter to get out of a Kin" Country forest without a Native guide, .and the mosquitoes are so vicious at this season of the year that one night in the bush is quite enough.
