On Friday the Government-paid over to the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid lioard," tho subsidy (245. ill the £), on the amount subscribed for the erection of a Children's Hospital in Wellington. In 'all tho splendid sum of £7311 9s. 4d: was raised by the public. The manner of its raising, which stands as a record'in New Zealand, will be remembered. The Mayoress (Mrs. .Wilford) had presided over a preliminary meeting at whicli ways and means. of raising • subscriptions were discussed. .Tho newspaper patagraph iell under the eye of Mr. Hugh Ward • (who is now joining..'th& .firm of J. C. Williamson, Ltd.); and ho at once'dovised a plan whereby "it was estimated a good round sum would be raised. Ho offered £100, "if fiyo other citizens'would contribute a lileo amount and eight others £50, and,also, promised, if this amount was raised, , to give, a matinee performance. Tho response was little short of' .electrical.' ' Iho money camo rolling in as never before in Wellington. Tho first £1000 was' soon raised, but that was only the start. Other largo sums were contributed, street collections were made by tho Ward Company and friends, ;the matinco was a great successj and' Mts. Wilford and her friends. worked. like Trojans, with tho result that, twice '.as good a Children's 'Hospital will b<j erected than was originally contemplated. While the now building is being erected, the children- will bo accommodated'in Mother Mary Aubert's i Homo, tho Otaki Sanatorium, and j the main hospital.
