The Supplementary Estimates, whict were brought down in tho Houso ol Representatives early on Saturday morning, contain a number of interesting items. Under the heading "General, Expense: in Legislative Department," appear vote; of £140, compassionate allowance t( widow of J. L. Cooke, late clerk ir Bills Office, and £31 compassionate allowance to widow of R. Crabb, lat< messenger. 'The cost of the Parliamentary In quiry.ro allegations of Mr. J. B. The salary to bo allowed the office] who is appointed superintendent of the National Provident Fund is fixed ai £50. In regard to tho conveyance of mail: by sea, there is an item: San Franciscc sorvice, £3666. Included in tho increases of salarj in the Justice Department-, is one o: £50 to tho Visiting Adviser, and then is an item: "Expenses connected witi Reformatory Farm, Tokonui," £1000.' Additional compensation to' Jlarj M'Guire,on account of the death oi her late _ husband, Sergeant Johi M'Guire, is awarded to the extent o: £250. Compensation to children (£soo' and funeral expenses (£34) of late Con stable H. H. Hancox, accidentally drowned whilo on duty, are provided. Purchase, messenger, High Commissioner's office, on retirement, £222, and £15G to widow of H. D. Matier, late temporary clerk, Postal Department-, are provided. A vote of £5000 appeared as compensation to J. J. Meikle, in full and final payment for wrongful imprisonment, but was reduced by the Houso to £2500. Thero is an item, "£IOOO. contribution towards Antarctic Expedition, Captain Scott." Coronation Votes. . Other it-ems are: Coronation expenses in Now Zealand, on account, £1000; contribution for memorial to Hon. A. Pitt,, Nelson, £300; Departmental inquiry, Taxes and Valuation Departments, £1000; and Dominion Day celebrations, 1910, £100. A donation of £1000 for .reb'ef of distress caused by disaster in Wellmgn Colliery, Whitehaven, England, ■ is proposed. The expenses in connection with the decease of King Edward VII, and accession of King George V, are set down at £400. A vote of £7400 is provided to cover the expenses in connection with military reviews, etc., during Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener's visit. There are votes of £1500 for Premier's visit Home in regard to Coronation ; £450 for Hon. G. Fowlds, and £200 for his soiretary, in connectioa with his visit to South Africa. Other votes are: Festival of Empire, £2500; additional grant to 6wimming associations, £100; grant in aid of free, art galleries, £2000; official entertainments in London during Coronation, £500; payment to shareholders Westport-Cardiff Coal Co., £1000; payment to medical officer, London, £1000; payment to Public Service Superannuation Fund for 1910, in rcr.pect' of Polico Provident Fund, £2500; mid subsidy of £300 (£ for £) to Bickertnn Fund.' aTIio following ' gratuities are provided : Widows of late' members of Legislature, Mrs. . Defence. Defence votes include: £110, visit of cadet representatives to England and Canada; £250, passages and expenses of cadets attending Australian Military College-; compassionate allo.wanco to James Mathers, on account of tho loss of their son, £100; and payment to James MTjeavey, in rcspect of liabilities of the Horowhenua Mounted Riflo Corps, disbanded, £128. There is to bo a compassionate allowance to Mrs. Thos. Redmond, on account of fatal accident to her son, an officer in tiie Customs Department. Tho machine was so constructed that in ad;i- dition to its main function of dressing the flax, fee method of which enhanced the value of tho fibre, certain by-l-i products could also be treated; He had no .information as to results. So far as ho knew, tho machine was not yet in use. k" Mr. W. H.
