DRAINING WELLINGTON.

In conversation with a Dominion rea porter yesterday, Mr. J. M. Morieo, Assistant City Engineer, briefly outlined the"'progress to date of ths Greater Wellington drainago scheme, i now ■ rapidly approaching completion. Viewing • developments in progress and in immediate prospect involves a flying survey of the suburbs that surround-the '-. city proper. A. great part of Hataitai now has a drainage service, althorigl the outer slopes facing tho sea have.still to bo reticulated. Kilbirnie North ia completely drained, and to a largo extent by a gravitation system. Somo of the lower parts of South Kilbirnie aro drained directly to the main ■ outfall, and work is actively proceeding in the areas still- undrained. i An , ejector ' chamber has been constructed at Tully,' Street, and another will be put in short.ly at Salek Street. The space between these points has still to be reticulated, and sewage mains carried from the Salek Street ejector to the outfall. Tho Bridge Street Valley, lear the city boundary, is to be drained through a short- tunnel leading to the Salek Street ejector. There is already an ejector ■at Balena Bay, another is to be made at a point about three-quarters of a mile north of the Patent Slip, and still anotller at a little distance south of tho Slip. At present sewage from . the Balena Bay ejector is driven towards tho outfall by way of the main sewer traversing the' city. But when the system' is completed tho ejector at Balena Bay . will be the first of a series from which' sewage will be propelled towards tha. outfall, by a much shorter route, in tha reverse direction. Included in the work still to be carried out is tho laying of ah 8-inch' cast-iron main from Balena Bay to'the ejector, south of the Patent Slip, and tliencd of a ten-inch main to. tho outfall. An air-main has been already carricd from the pumping engines at the destructor to,t. le Tully Street ejector. It is anticipated that this main will bo continued to tho site of the Salek Street ejector in about ' a couplo of months' time'. Tho drainage of Brooklyn and Fitchett Town has been practically completed, and tho finishing touches are iust being ■' put to the system at Island Bay. Tha drainago reticulation of Kelburne was completed some time ago with the exception of somo new streets made after the drainage lines had been laid down. Drainago surveys are now in. progress ' at Northland and Wadcstown. Both suburbs amalgamated with' the city after tho .drainage loan had been sane-, tioned by the ratepayers, but it was considered that the loan raised for Melrose drainago was sufficient to provide as well for the drainage of Northland, and Wadestoivn. Parliament sanctioned the inclusion of these suburbs in tha ,Melrose drainage scheme, but in nei- N tiler have operations yet got beyond the survey stage. An additional factor operating here, as in other suburbs, is tho formation of new streets subsequent to the period at which _ the drainage , ' scliemo was designed. A drainage system has been in working in -tho lower part of Roseneath for the past eighteen months, but drainage of the higher levels has been delayed ' owing to the absence of a water' supply. This disability will shortly be removed by the completion of a new highlevel reservoir, '
