Africa, which the people of tho Union, aro presenting to tho King, has arrived at the Zoological Gardens. • It consists of a pair of giant bustards, tho "Goin Paauw' of the Dutch colonists,. the largest and rarest of living bustards; a -.Stanley crane, and a black-breasted harrier eagle, new to tho London collection. These were presented by Dr. Louis Poringiiey, director of the South African Museum,' and were conveyed to England free of charge by the kindness of tho Union-Castle Line. ' Tho bulk of the collection : will be brought to the Zoological Gardens in tho spring of Mil, and exhibited throughout'the summer as the King's South African collection. Committees, have been formed in the various South African provinces, with the object of carrying out the royal presentation, tho animals which are to Iμ sent to 'London being collected in South Africa. Professor Elliot Smith, of the University of Manchester, declares that the mummy of Ea-Nefer, at present in the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, is six centuries older than any other known mummy. The body of Ka-Nefev., who was a high official in the Court of Sneferu, of the fourth dynasty (3700 8.C.), was found by Dr. Flinders Petrio at Medum, Egypt. The Imperial Social Circle, founded by tho Eev. W. J. Gomersall ,a Presbyterian minister, of Stanley House, Hampstead, opened its fifth "season" at the Eustace'. Jlilcs restaurant .recently. Tho aim o£ the circle is "to combat the loneliness of London, and to link up lonely Britishers all over tho Empire." The record to date is 500 marriages.
