DRAINAGE OF EASTBOURNE.
ME. MESTAYER'S SCHEME. Mr. R. L. Mestayor's schomo for the drainage of Eastbourne divides the borough into three drainage areas—No. 1 from the northern boundary (north side of Rona Bay).to a lino extending from •the sea to the hills level with tho north end of the Recreation Ground; No. 2, from the line mentioned to Miro Street ; and No. 3, from" Miro Street to the southern boundary. Each of these districts' will drain to a station sunk (in concrete) into the beach above highwater mark, and, each station, or well, will bs fitted with an automatic sewage lift, which acts on the sewage reaching a certain level,- and releasing a lever, and pumps tho sewage to the highest point on the boundary between that and the area adjoining on the south side, where it falls by natural gravitation into the ordinary drainage system of that area, finds its way into No. 2statiqn, is pumped out and falls by gravitation into, station No. 3, whence it is pumped out once more, and proceeds still southward to a septic tank proposed to be erected near tho southenTboundary of the borough. For this work, Mr. Mestayer provides for six-inch steel.pipes in areas 1 arid 2, and eight-inch in area 3. Tho engineer estimates that the whole of the drainage of the borough could be provided for on tho lfnes laid down for £8065. • ■ ' ■: .. ■
