HOTEL EMPLOYEES.

.A FEDERATION CONFERENCE. Active steps are being taken to comeiit the existing federation of Now Zealand hotel employees' unions, and to extend its scono. A federation conference is to be" held at Wellington on December 19. At present only threo of the four existing unions in the large centres, namely, those of Wellington, Otago, and Auckland, are affiliated to the federation, but a special invitation is being extended to the Canterbury Union to take part in the. approaching conference, and to join the federation. Members of unions affiliated to the central organisation at present number about, two thousand. Remits for the order paper at the conference are be-, ing invited from each of the four unions, including Canterbury. Business put forward by the federation executive will centre on its report,,including a statement anent work performed in obtaining recent awards bearing, on tlie hotel trade, and efforts of the federation in the direction or' improving the Act just passed. The executive will bring down instructions to- members and country workers as to their position under tho new Act. Consideration will he invited of proposals in the direction of obtaining new awards in the restaurant and private hotel industry in the four centres. Another question advanced will be that of assisting the Dunedin union to obtain an industrial agreement to cover the hotel employees of Otago. Further remits concern the organisation of country hotel workers and tho adoption of methods for securing' tho strict' observance of the new Act' in the country districts. The conference will be giv-en an.opportuntiy of extending fraternal greetings: to kindred organisation in Australia, and amendments to the constitution of the' federation, suggested some timo ago by the Christchurch Union, will be con-' sidered. . .
