According to the monthly statement ; of .finances,-there was a debit balance of £724 10s., as compared with a debit balance of £578 9s. Id. The debit balance was on the buildings account only, the various other accounts all being in credit. The total authorisation amounted to £4134 93. Bd. . : % Tho chairman explained that a large Bum of money—£2276 4s. 4d.—had been paid over to the Technical School,'which had a prospective claim for that amount, and, being in need of funds, • the board handed it over. He was pleased to note that the debit balance on the building account was not. so ]arge as it used to be. ' : SCHOOL WORKS AND EQUIPMENT. 'On the recommendation'Of the Works, and Finance Committee, grants . for works, school equipment, etc., were authorised for the schools at Mauriceville West, ■ Taueru, Porirua, Eketahuna, Upper Hutt, Scarborough, Gladstone, Pongaroa, Putara, Kilbirnie, Normal School, Hukanui, South Wellington, Puketoi, Coonoor, Featherston, Pahiatua, and Tenui. , • ■It was agreed that application be made to the Education Department for a-grant for gas equipment for the cookery and science rooms, if required in 'connection with class-work at Levin, aiid. also for an additional grant of £100 for the completion of rooms for the rural course. • Applications .for grants for works at Petono Main School -' and Belvedere were referred to the cleric of works for "report. Applications for grants for works at Brooklyn, Pahiatua, and Tau"herinikau were declined. The offer by Mr. Madely of an.additional area behind the Mount''Cook Girls' School, free of rent for a period of ten years, was accepted with: thanks. It was resolved -that- members of! the board conveniently situated should visit-the Petone West School and re- / port upon requirements. Library subsidies*were approved for, the schools at: Nireaha, £2 16s. 3d.; Kaiparoro, £2; Mauriceville, "-£2 12s. '• A proposal from the committee of the Petone District High Sohool witlv reference to-the introduction of a rural course was referred to'the inspectors for report.- ■ , ' .. . ■ • The board approved of a proposal to establish a miniature.rifle range at Car- : terton. - . , Mr. Buchanan made strong complaint j on the subject of tho water supply at Belvedere. ' ' :"■■; 'new schools. ,A ; .renewal of the agitation by the , residents of Vogeltown ■, for the establishment of a school to serve the needs of the district appeared in the shape of a letter, from the local Ratepayers' ''Association. During a short discussion, it was pointed out that when a similar Request had been preferred—about : two. years ago—the, board had replied :' tfiat .it was not prepared to. proceed with the rehabilitation of the old VogelV town School, but would consider at the proper time the establishment of ?1 k school on a different site. The question ' of making additions-to the Brooklyn ; School was ,at,;..thati time:-before, the board. The position now-was that , a . •-.. more suitable and more convenient : site was on ; the Morningt-on ;. Estate, .further, away ..from ; ; Brooklyn than- the old school, .v."!,. ; ... : ■■• ..'■. Mr. Buchanan raised the question of. the education, requirements of. Table- . lands, and urged that something be i done to provide a more centrally situated building for the children of tho district. The board agreed to make application to the i Department for a grant, in aid, the settlers agreeing to ■ pay half the. cost. • It was resolved that subject to the report.. 'of ■ the inspectors being satis- ' factory, application be made to the Government for a grant for , the erection of,a school at Aohanga. •. rlt was also agreed that the new school at Hinemoa- should be- opened at the beginning of. the year, and that ia ■ teacher; be appointed.. ..
