ARRIVAL OF THE TAINUI.
13,230 MILES IN 40 DAYS.
■ "It is all through the time'lost at Hobart," said Captain T. Moft'att' to v a -reporter shortly after the Tainui berthed at tbo Queen's Wharf,.Wellington* on Saturday morning from London. "We had 781 tons of cargo to discharge there, and instead of taking 10 hours, as they, should have done to shift it, the men took. 18 hours. Only. for. this my ship would have been alongside this wharf early'on Friday afternoon." -As-it is the Tainui has mado a remarkably good run from London to Wellington, for she steamed the 13,230 miles in tho record time of 40 days 1 hour 34 minutes. Leaving London on October 14 the vessel made a call, at Plymouth to embark passengers and mails, leaving the South of England port at 6.9 p.m. on October 15 for Santa Cruz, which port was reached at 2 a.m. on October 20. Departure was taken again at noon of the same day, tho vessel experiencing light trades and good weather on the run down • to Cape Town, which jivas reached at 8 a.m. on November 3. After coaling, the Cape was left at 5 p.m. the same day for the run across the Southern Ocean. In these latitudes some exceptionally good steaming was done, the Tainui averaging 14 knots an hour between Cape Town, and Wellington, and an average of 13.75 knots an hour for the whole voyage. Her biggest day's run was 346 miles,-while the smallest was 303 miles. Until three days before Hobart was reached the vessel encountered moderate winds to strong gales with high seas, port being made ■at 5.15 a.m. on November 21. After a stay of 23 hours, referred to above, departurewas taken for Wellington at 4.15 a.m. on November 26, and after a run of 3 days 21 hours the anchor was dropped in Port Nicholson at 1.1G.a.m. on Saturday, tho vessel berthing at the Queen's Wharf at 9 a.m.. The Tainui carried 499 passengers for all ports, and a large quantity of general cargo.'
Captain Moffatt showed fine seamanship in bringing his steamer into port, for it was blowing hard at the Beads and tho night was thick. The officers associated with him are:—Chief, Mr. V. J. Bosdet; second, Mr. C. B. Foxley; third, Mr. J. Wilson;.fourth, Mr. H. E. Gordon. The surgeon is Dr. Dunklev, and Mr. W. J. Wahlers if purser: Mr. G. Greenhill is in charge of the engine room, and has with him Mr. D. Wynd, second; Mr. T. H. Webb, third; chief refrigerating engineer. Mr. E. B. Day; second, Mr. F. B. Ridley.. Mr. H. Smith is electrician and Mr. G. H-ebden boilermaker. . ■
The Tainiii commences the discharge of her cargo to-day, and subsequently leaves for the' south towards the end of tho week.
