Eegarlling the, death bj accident of Mr« ( Alexander M'Hutchon, the well-known; settler of Wh'akatakiy and clerk'to'the-; Castlepoint County. Council- (reported on< Saturday) a Wairarapa paper says thatthe late Jlr. M'Hutchon was one of the - oldest, best known, and. most highly respected settlers in the district. Born in Ayrshire,- Scotlnnd, in 1810,' he was seventy years of age at the time of hie death. He was apprenticed in his ha» tivo town- to the. grocery trade, , and ar-. riv«d in Wellington by tho ship Hastings in 1559. A few years later he opened, a general, store at Castlepoint, which he successfully conducted for a' : number of years. He afterwards took up' land at Whakataki, and erected the present Whakataki Hotel. During recent years he has lived on. . his homestead .'at Whakataki, and has been clerk "amlovcrseer to the Castlepoint -County, Council. As "a settlor-he was, perhaps;'the' ; best known aloug the coast. For a long number of years the latoMr. M'Hutchon had been. identif»d with' .the' local bodies of the district.
