WHEN THE GREEN SEA CAME.
' ALMOST A TRAGEDY. When the Tainui was within four days of Hobartshe shipped tho biggest green sea of the voyage out, and three people escaped death, by a miracle. A mother and her two children (a Mrs. Dumraer, who was coming, out to join her hus-' band at Lyttelton) had seated themselves on tho steam-pipe casing, near No 3 bunker, tho hatch of which had been opened to allow ono of the officers going bslow on a visit o'f inspection, when a hugo green wavo reared itself over tho side and swept across tho dech Tho monster caught up the lady and her children and literally threw them into the hold, a- fall of 25 feet. Tho unfor-' timate lady struck tho hatch beneath but her body broke the fall of her two children, who escaped unhurt and with, no suspicion of tho peril which they ha*d passed through. They picked themselves up, and one of them remarked in childish surprise "What a bump!" The injured lady in her unconscious condition was lifted out of .the hold and taken to the. ship's, hospital, where she was attended to by Dr. W. W. Dnnkley. On examination' she was found to have sus•tained' an < injury toher back, a severe scalp wound, and other hurts. ■
On inquiry,.on the ship yesterday she was reported to. be making satisfactory, progress. She -will remain on board un-' til the vessel .arrives at Lyttelton, and so avoid the inconvenience and possible danger of transhipment.
