Word has also been received; .that Chris. Johnson, aged eight years, was accidentally drowned while bathing in the canal at Kaitangata on Saturday. RUN OVER BY A TRAIN. FATAL INJURIES. Information was received by the police yesterday of a shocking fatal • accident that occurred on the railway line between Shannon and Koputarua on Saturday night. From the particulars to hand, it appears that two men named Patrick M'Ginn and Carl Bell Grey were returning • home by way of the railway line. After going a certain distance, Grey stepped otf the line and' sat down, but M'Ginn continued to wall; aliead. Before ho had gone very far a train - came along from behind. The pedestrian must have been quite oblivious to its approach, and the driver could not have seon what was about to occur until too late, for the man was knocked down and run over. The train was brought up in two or three chains distance, and by the time the officials rushed back Grey had reached his mate, to find that very severo injuries had been inflicted. With' all possible caro the sufferer was placed in the van, conveyed to Levin, and admitted to the Hospital there.. His case, however, proved hopeless, and M'Ginn died at 4.20 a.m. yesterday. Both deceased and his friend Groy were employed on a flaxmill in the district. Deceased • has no relatives there, but is understood to have friends at North Avon, Christchurch. CHILD SCALDED IN A BATH. Guy Compton, a child three years of age, son of Mr. Thomas Compton, 25 Rhodes ■• Street, was admitte'd to the Hospital last evening suffering from serious injuries. It : appears that the child's mother had ' prepared a bath, and tho Water, which was; almost boil-' ing, was to be allowed to cool off. The door of the bathroom was not secured, and tho child walked in unobserved and toppled into the bath. SERIOUS FALL OFF A CYCLE. . Louis A. Sanderson, accountant, residing at 19 Kenwyn Terrace; was cycling towards Newtown at 12.45 p.m. on Saturday, and when be was opposite the residence of Dr. Perkins, in jLicraiis Street, people in the vicinity heard the tyre of his machino burst with a loud report; Mr. Wilson, of 9S Pirie Street, was one of those.near, and, ..on looking towards where the sound came from", he saw that Sanderson. had fallen from his bicycle on to ' the* wood-blocking. Mr. Wilson lifted tho man up, Dr. Bowerbank' was then summoned, and the injured rider was 'removed to the Hospital in an unconscious condition. Jamieson accidentally fell into the water. His call for help attracted the attention of some other boys who ■were fishing at tho end of the wharf, and one, named G: Douglas, dived in and pulled thq boy out. When the rescued one was up on the wharf he was a little weak, but soon got over his unexpected wetting.
