CORONATION FESTIVITIES.

DOMINION ATHLETES INVITED,

Yesterday tlio Council of the _ New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association held a brief conference with Mr. Wm. Henry, of the. Royal . Life-Saring Society, who is also acting as an organiser, in connection with the Festival of Empire which is to bo held at the Crystal Palace, London, during Coronation week. Members of the Athletic Association Council who attended were:, Messrs. E. L. Chnfiey (vicepresident), J. H.' Pollock, Fleming, Ross, J. F. 'XhompEon,. M. H. Oram, and C. E. Bridge. Mr. A. Marryatt, president of the association, sent 1 an apology for.absence. Mr. Henry, after explaining tho general scope of the Festival, indicated thti lines upon which its attendant athletic programme•■ would ho carried out. The idea was to attract repre sentatives of the best British manhood to the Coronation festivities from the ;four great sections of the Empire. Canada, South Africa, Australasia, and Great Britain would each be invited to enter ten competitors. . Canada, Mr. Henry mentioned, had already ■ accepted :tho invitation. A four-cornered contest would bo held in running, swimming, .boxing, and wrestling: For tho best aggregate performance- a trophy valued at 250 guineas would be awarded. There would be no heats. I .In competing for this trophy, each section- of the Empiro would enter one runner, one swimmer, one- boxer, and one wrestler. ■ ' . The representatives _ of the New Zealand Athletic Association declared themselves very willingto entertain the idea of sending representatives to ' tho .Festival. They made no promise meantime, stating that the matter was purely one of finance. ■ Tho proposal will be considered at an early meeting of tho council, and communications are to bo- opened with the Australasian Amateur Athletic Federation. . ■
