Tho thunderstorm of Mondny afternoon was'felt, severely'at.To Ore Ore. It appeared to bo aocoinpanied in those parts by a whirl-wind,, which'.wrought havoc with willow.and ornamental trees, andscattered branches in all directions. The question. of . who shall pay tho cost of lowering the gas-mains in connection ' with the bridge construction works, at the northern approach of the town was considered at a special meetin? of tho Masterton County Council to-day, ins Mayor of JTasterton, who was present at tho meeting, by invitation,. conMnded that tho cost of this work should, come out of. the bridge loan. Several • county councillors, however, maintained that dealing with gas-mains should not bo a charge against the lean. Jiventunlly it was decided that tho work be paid for out of the/lean, provided that it does not cost more than .£SO. It was stated by Jlr. Blackniau, gas manager, in his report to the Jlosierton Borough Council last evening, that the price of~gas in Masterton, ,viz., 6s. 3d. per 1000 ft., was, considering the. cost of coal, cheaper than auy other township in New Zealand. Mr. J. C. Brown, poultry instructor under the Agricultural Department, is at present in llasterton. He intends visiting several poultry-yards, and discussing tlie industry with those interested.
