A CENSUS OF 1847.
FIFTEEN RTJNHOLDERS,
In tho same publication appeared what was claimed to bo "A very accurate statistical table" of, the population, eto., in the Wairarapa at the commencement of March, 1847. There were fifteen different sheep stations, and on these wore 59 men, 14 women, and, 19 children; 73 horses, 1366 cattle, and 13,011 sheep. The area of land in cultivation was given as 25 acres. The fifteen runholdcrs were as follow :—Ahioruhe and Parinuiokaka, Messrs.' Tiffin and Northwood (9 cattle, 2750 sheep); Huangar,oa, Captain Smith (90 cattle, 2000 sheep); Hakeke, Morrison (100 cattle); Kopungarara, Mr. C.'R. Bidwill (195 cattle, 420 sheep) J Warek'aka, Messrs. Clifford and Weld (13 cattle, 3200 sheep); Otaraea, Mr. Gillies (60 cattle); Tuiterata, Mr. M'Moster (120 cattle, 1 sheep); Tauanui, Hr. Allom (180 cattle, 274 eheep); Turanganui (north), Mr. Kelly
(60 cattle); Turanganui (south), Messrs. Williamson and Drummond (370 cattle); AVhangai Moana, Messrs. Russell and Wilson (2 cattle, 1000 shoop); Watorangi, Messrs. Fitzherbert and Pharazyn (12 cattle, 9GG sheep); KawaKawa, Mr. T. P. Russoll (62 cattle, 800 sheep); Kiriwai, Mr. Cameron (62 cattle); and Mauganoa (on cqst coast), Mr. Barton (50 cattle, 1600 sheep).
Acording to a letter written by Mr. Allom at this time all tho stations except Tauatmi and Kopungarara made as much butter and choeso as possible, some turning out 1501b. a week in tho season, and fow making less than 50 or 601b. Tho butter was boated round to Wellington, and the.prices obtained ranged from 9d. to 2s. a pound. The sheep with, which the Wairarapa was originally stocked came mostly from Sydney and Twofold Bay, in 'New South Wales, and from Port' Fairy in Victoria, and were principally pure monnot : t ' ■ -• • ■ ■ ;
