DR. CUTHRIE.
, ....;A .STATUE AT EDINBURGH. . ' A statue of tho Rev. Dr. Thomas .Gut-brio, tho eminent . preacher and -philanthropist, was unveiled recently in West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. Tlio memorial is the work of Mr. V. W. Pomcroy, A.R.A., and it is tho gift of Dr. Guthric's family. Lord Balfour, who performed the un-, veiling ceremony, said they were there to do honour to a great' Scotsman, described upon-the pedestal of that memorial as a parish minister,'ah eloquent preacher,' ■; tho founder of the Edinburgh original Ragged. Schools, and by tongue and pen the apostlo of tho movement elsewhere. So ho was worthy to take a. place in the very front, rank of his fellow countrymen. In many, ways he was marvellously in advance of his. time. He was a pioneer in the movement in ragged schools, and in theso days they could hardly picturo to ■ themselves the condition of-things as they then existed. Dr. Guthrio was the first to see tho' necessity of protecting the poorest and tlio most helpless from the injury of ignorance. His work lived after him, and would live to tho latest generation. Ho was a great orator, a practical philanthropist, a very- apostlo of social reform. ' After the Lord Provost.had accepted ■tho statue on - behalf of .the city, Mr. Alex. Guthric, of Liverpool, on behalf of the family,' thanked Lord Balfour with sincere gratitude for tho s"ervico ho had so kindly remembered.
