At the .Arbitration Court to-day, ill the dispute liettaeon the Canterbury Shearers and .Woolshecl Employees'. , Union, msd tho Canterbury Sheep Owners' Union, Sir. F. H, Labatt (for tho last-mentioned) contended that, no ballot of members ot the Shearers' Union was taken- on the question of' the. submission of tho dispute to the. Court. He asked that the Court .should tako ovidened in tho matter in other centrts. ,as the Shearers' Union, if it obtained an award in the present casfe, would probably ask for -a similar award in other parts of the JJoininion. Sliecp-owqers, wlio; were mostly small farmers,. and. who ■ claimed 'tho right to tmplfij ioejl aivl ' iiov.tiaiieiit men, considered .that \xn* award (no matter how elastic 'it was in provisions), would prove,, detrimental .to 1 tho industry. On the . objection raised, at Tuesday's hearing, as to the dispute not.having boon properly referred to the.' Court, Jtr. Laraey, for the union, stated that the new rules of tho union were registered on May 28, 1010, and a. .resolution empowering the executive lo take tho'necessary steps to bring tho matter before the Court was agreed to. On May 50, 1910,' a ballot was taken, and the result was recorded ini the mmule-book, wl;ich lie handed in.. P. Waddell was called to give evidence regarding the existence of tho dispulo at tho time the resolution wits passed, but,' as this .evidence was contained in tho correspondence of tho union, which was not then available, tho matter' was adjourned till 10 a.m. next dny. '
