"INADEQUATE COMPENSATION."
' A TARANAKI LAND QUESTION. In its report of tho proceedings of the meeting of. the. Taranaki Executive of the Now Zealand. Farmers' Union the "Hawera Star" says that Mr. E. Maxwell ,informed : ' tho' executive that the Public Trustee was advertising native land situate near'-the Parihaka village, for a short-lease,of 21 years, witU.no right of, renewal, ' with compensation /up to .£2 only. He. thought these terms were unjust and that they should induco the Public Trustee to give more, liberal terms. The country in the Parihaka block was over-run with ..weeds,, and .before the settlers had got their land cleared of bush it would probably be a' mass of weeds. The proposed, <£2, would not cover tho cost ,of felling the wood, let alono the . grassing. The European would be. only 'working in- the interests of the > Native to whom the land would revert. " - . ' ;Mr. R.'Lambie. agreed; that the conditions were not nght,.and : that .£5 compensation wonld be> ; nearer.the mark. •
. After some further discussion, Mr. Maxwell , moved the- following Tesolu-tion-.—"Having seen the advertisement by tho Public Trustee that certain native lands .'in the Newell Bun are offered for lease for 21 years without right of renewal and only £2 compensation for improvements, the Tarajiaki Executive wishes to respectfully appeal to tho Public Trustee to alter the conditions as the executive, is satisfied that they are unjust for .tho,.,following; reasons.: (1) That.the tenant would'have" to spend at the least JZi per, acre before any of these lands could :bo. brought into' profitable occupation; (2) that, experience 1 has shown in this locality, owing to the nature of the bush; there is a difficulty in .getting good burns; and years are lost before any return is obtained'and .the remaining years of the' definite term of 21. are required to make up. the "loss', of. with -b&cU rent and interest,-and-leaves ho chance of recovering. the - difference between the actual cost of improvements, and the '£2 allowed; (3) the.lands are adjacent .to open Native lands, arid ..iinfosted with weeds, and as soon as cleaned are certain to ; be.similarly over-run unless a greater incentive is offered to tenants to' control them than under the, conditions now advertised." . ■ -,'• •'.'•,; Mr.'Xambio seconded 1 the- motion,' and it was' carried ufianimotfsjy. • •"- I ! iHE'sjflow Reason. .:: A TABLE OP DATES.
