]- The semi-finals of the Wellington' Literary' and ' Debating Societies' tournament .were concluded on Saturday last,, when a team representing St. Hilda's Debating Society, Islsfld Bay, met a team from the .Victoria College Debating Society at tho Tc»>ms of the fornier. The motion was: "That, in view of the development of the Oriental nations, it is in the best interests of Australia and New Zealand to form an alliance with the United States of America."' Mr. Boocock was in the chair. Mr. F. M. Hay, who judged, awarded the debate to the Victoria College team, awarding points as follows:— ■ St. Hilda's treatment, 18; A. S. Collins, 7C; W. J. Edwards, 69; 8. -J. Collie, 85; total, 218. Victoria College (negative)—D. S. Smith, « 83; W. J. M'Eldowney, 74; J. M. Hogbcn, 79; collectivo treatment, 20; total, 25G. Of the 270 immigrants who arrived by the Euapehu on Friday about three-quar-ters have already gone, or intend proceeding forthwith, to other parts of the Dominion. In reply to an inquiry addressed to the Labour Department on Saturday it was stated that very few of the immigrants remaining in WellinEton have yot called on tho employment bureau. One, a tailor, has obtained work through tho agency of tho Department. For any immigrants who are prepared to go up country to undertako milking or other classes of farm work tho Department readily obtain employment,/ as the demand for workers of this class exceeds the supply. Work is also available for navvies in tho Nelson district. Artisans nmong the immigrants may not so readily obtain employment, although there is stated to be a demand for certain classes of skilled. workers, notably carpenters.
