OFFICERS' COMMISSIONS. COMPETITIONS TN MABKSMANSHIP. . Junior Cadet Orders, just published, include the following; announcements-.—". The appointment of 1\ E. Just, as a stair sergeant-instructor at .Wellington, has been approved. The following probationary appointments (six months) to similar positions at the centres named have also teen approved:—S. Jloore, A. U. Barlow (Auckland)'; J. Kennedy (Christchurch); G. ■ l>. Bishop, J. Cummings (Dunedin); J. M'Donald (Nelson); J. P.. Koutledge, S. Mellows (Wellington). In order to interfere as little as possible with the interior economy of the schools, correspondent addressed . from Cadet Headquarters to officers commanding individual units, and from battalion commanders to their company officers,. will be sent in future through the headmasters of tlio schools concerned. Company commanders corresponding with Headquarters or their battalion commanders will submit such correspondence. to their headmasters before dispatching. Between headquarters and' battalion commanders, correspondence, as hitherto, will be of a direct nature. .

Training Camps and Examinations. Officers, willing to attend an officers' camp of instruction to be held in tho four chief centres—Wellington, Auckland, Chnstehurch, Dunediri—arc invited to send, m-their names to cadet headquar-" ters. .Free railway and. .boat passages will bo arranged, also, tents .and rations will. be.supplied free of cost. The date suggested is tho last-week-in the Christ-, mas vacation, but suggestions from officers commanding battalions as 'to the date or dates most suitable for their respective; centres are" invited, to enable definite arrangements to.be made' for camps... • . ; 'In connection with the applications of officers of junior cadets for permission' to sit for examination for substantive commissions under the Central Board of Examination Regulations, it jv-jll be necessary in all such cases for candidates to make application through the Commandant of Junior Cadets, who will requisition for examination papers accordingly, rho examination of lieutenants will consist of:— '

(a) A paper on duties and discipline as set forth in tho King's Regulations, the Defenco Act, 1909,. with its amendments, the General Regulations of tho New Zealand Defence Forces, and the Junior Cadet Regulations. (b) A practical test. of. the ..candidate's fitness for command, ■ under -all circumstances; a • unit corresponding to that which ho would be entitled to take charge of upon obtaining substantial rank, tho test to include viva toco questions in the field, giving oonimands and explaining, m a clear and audiblo style, the exercise or manoeuvre to be carried out. ' (c) A. second paper on drills and musketry as prescribed in Infantry training aud Field Sevvico Regulations.- ■ Candidates for substantial commissions for ; the. rank of captain will be reciuired to explain, the formation and manoeuvre of a 'company-with the. battalion oii , : parade and in~tho- field;—; - .
