November 18, 8.20 p.m.) • -. sycinoy, November 18,. ■ Thero was magnificent weather " fori the eommencoment of the match between .the South Africans, and New South Wales. Tho attendance totalled 6000, winch*-was 1 good' for an off day. Sherwell, ;tho Soutlr African 'captain, won tho toss, and . elected to bat. The wicket was' hard' and fast* ;:Zulc-h and Strieker opened. the. South-' African innings' to the bowling of Cotter and Kelleway.-, Both.splayed carefully, but ' Strieker ..was, nnoomfortable to Cotter's fast deliveries, , Zulch was more free, but -showed a .tendency to' play back. When his score stood at fourteen, however, he went forward to' Kelleway, but snicked the ball to Folkard, at iong-slip, who. held it. Two overs later 'Snooke, who had scored six, played an exactly Similar stroke ; and Emery'took the catch., Nourse joined Strieker, arid Hordern relieved Cotter -with the ball., Nourse punished the > slow bowler, but; after two overs M'Cartney took up the bowiing from Folkard at the other end. Runs oontinued to come slowly, with hn occasional brilliant stroko by.; Nourse, who was cutting splendidly. Strieker's play, was less interesting, but: he, however, punished anything loose, and leaenea the half-century ■ after, an hour and 54 minutes' batting. . Emery now. took up .the bowling from -M'Cartney, and in,his second ov-er Nourse tipped the ball, which was'cleverly, .caught by Kelleway, at close slip. Faulkner followed, and showed dash and brilliance immediately', glancing Emery to the fence. Strieker, after a ,st-ay of two hours and twenty minutes at .the wickets, was! clean bowled by Kelleway. His score' of 73 included ten fourers. Llewellyn followed, and -batted with freedom, • but Folkard clean-bowled him when he had-made 13., ■ Schwarz,. who was next,' was dismissed by Folkard's first ball. Faulkner severely punished anything short or on the leg side, his best stroke being' a pretty leg glance. Vogler, after scoring 12, tried to play bide 'to a .fast, one from . Cotter, and was bowled., '..
The South Africans' second. century. appeared after.2s3: minutes' play.. Whei. •Pearse joined ' Faulkner: they livened play considerably. . Pearse hit a sixer off Hordern, and the next ball he landed to the fence. ' : Fanlkner.:had just pass.ed Strieker's score when Emery • yorked bis,'middle stump. He had hit 12 fourersi.;' Commaillo was given out legbefore to KeUeway before he had scored. Sherwell, the captain, "was last to'go in', as he was suffering from a cold. When he had made 45, Pearse drove KelldW'ay hard back, to the bowler, who madq a brilliant catch, arid the South Africans were all out for 3QO, which occupied 331 minutes in tho making. The South' Africans wasted no tim.e between the fall of the wickets, a fact which was : greatly appreciated; V. Trumper and Bardsley opened the New South . Wales innings, to the at tack of Nourse and Vogler. Both batsmen played Confidently, and well, . and scored; 76 in 42 minutes, .
