WELLINGTON GIRLS' COLLEGE.

GARDEN PARTY AND SPORTS. A great many peoplo were present at the garden party held in connection with the Wellington Girls' Collego sports,. in tlie collego grounds, on Friday afternoon. It is really a most suitable place for the holding of such events, its broken ground and tho banks surrounding tho level portions set aside for, courts and various games, forming natural vantage points from which to view the course of proceedings. Flags were flying gaily in the decidedly vigorous breeze that held sway, and the music supplied by a baud sounded very pleasantly'in tho open air. The greatest interest was displayed in tho various events, some of which, notably tho hobble race, and tho animal race, and tho fancy costume race exciting a great amount of amusement. among the heholders. and, indeed, . among tlio performers themselves, who seemed to enjoy • themselves immensely. In the fancy costume race some of tho entries were excedingly ingenious, and never iii ono's wildest flights of fancy could one over have imagined a sack of flour running fleetly. And yet that happened. "The Last Rose of Summer" was exceedingly coquettish, aiid ■ ono really could not understand .why sho should have been left- blooming alone for so long. Tho Teddy Boar was delightful, and a Red Indian looked quite barbaric. In their natty, dark ■ blue gymnasium costumes, .tho .girls looked . extremely j businesslike and comfortable, and must surely wish that they could be utilised for, everyday wear. Tea was served in the central hall, which was decorated with flowers, and had long • tables arranged round tho sides of tho room. Only a number of peoplo wore allowed in at. a time, so as to avoid an idea which strikes one as being decidedly good, if ono happens to bo. ono of the .early .comers. . After tho sports cime to an end the prizes were awarded to. tho successful ones by tho Mayoress (Mrs. Wilford); who also awarded those of the swimming sports held iu March. Mrs. Wilford, in a pleasant little speech, congratulated tlio principal, Miss M'Lean, on tlio prowess of tlio girls, and also congratulated tlio girls of their achievements of the afternoon! compliments which tho girls returned by hearty cheers for Mrs.. "Wilford and for' Miss M'Lean.
