MASTERTON NOTES.
ANGLICAN FLORAL FETE. (Fropi o ( ur Special Correspondent.) Mastcrton, November 18. The floral fete held in Masterton yesterday to raise funds for the ercctiou of a new Anglican Church, proved a success. The weather was delightfully fi ne > and hundreds of people flocked to tho old' showgrounds, where pedestrian and equestrian sports were held. Tho various stalls were laden with articles of uso and ornament, and a large building ivas devoted to tlio exhibition of pot-plants and cut flowers. The Municipal Brass-Band contributed a varied programme, and an orchestra rendered selections in the tearoom. The stallholders were as follow:— Flower and pot-plants—Jfesdames IV. H. Beetham, H. H. Beethnm, Meredith, Gawith,-James, N. H. Jaines, G. W. Sellar, Hale, and Sliss Vallance. Cake stall— Jfesdames J. 11. Perry and Ewart. Produce and soft drinks—Jlesdames Mace, Winsctt, I'eilding, Holland, Constable, and Jlisses D. and, M. I'ilmer. Girls' Friendly Society stall—Mrs. Clougliton, and. Jlisses Townsend, G. Dixon, L. IJixon, B. Dixon, and D. Pinhcy. Art—Mesdames W. TV Hosking, J. W. Blackmail, Cook, Beard, Whitton, and C. F. Vallance. Sweets—Mrs. W. T. Cook, and Misses Cook and Hampton. Handkerchiefs—Mrs. Watson and Miss Fowler. Jlisses Dorothy Bennett and Kathleen Beard were in charge of tho bran tubs. Afternoon tea and supper were provided under tho capable direction of. Jlesdames Winzenberg and Jones. The Maypole dance was given by a number of daintily-dressed children, under the instruction of Mrs. Kendall. The decorated exhibits were numerous and artistic, and there was keen, competition in the various classes. During tho afternoon two events were run in connection with .the Amateur Athletic Club. It Is expected'that the gross takings at the fete will exceed A large number of private donations to tho Church Building Fund were made on the ground, and it is expected that tho work of erecting the new building, towards the cost of which .£2700 has now been subscribed, will bo put in hand at once. In tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, Sir. L. G. Reid, S.M., fixed the security for appeal in tho ease in which a resident of Pongai'oa was fined for supplying liquor at a.football club's smoke, concert. Mr. Pownall, who is acting for tho appelants, stated that as the. judgment.affected athletic bodies generally, it had 116011. decided to obtain a Supreme Court ruling on tho point. Several persons were fined in the Magistrate's Court this morning for riding-ui-cycles after sunset without lights. One person was also fined 2s. 6d., and 7s. costs, for allowing liis chimney to. become foul. Mr. .L. G. Keid, S.M., yesterday ."'nonsuited the plaintiff in the case in which, Mrs. Sonimerville, of Dannevirkc, claimed .£59 ss. from Robert Krahagen and 'Arthur W. Chapman, moneys alleged to ■be due on the purchase of 'a scction of laud.
