• . _fr , .. 3 MUSICAL EVENING INTERRUPTED.. 7 , ' i. serious' conflagration, occurred $t 3 3 Brougham Drive between 9 and 9 o'clock ~_ last night, resulting in an eiglit-roomed dwelling being almost ■ totally destroyed. The building was owned by Mrs. Hutche- ■ son, Seatoun, and occupied by Mrs. 3 Ehoda Everard. Tho ti.L.:i had made • preparation for a. musical evening, and D some ■of tho visitors had just arrived, 3 when one of tho members of the house--1 hold discovered flames upstairs. A screen • on the landing and part of the wall • were , then well ablaze, • and efforts were .. made to smother the flames with blankets g and whatever else was handy. This proved unavailing, and the family and 1 visitors had "then to make a hurried exit. „ Tho fire brigade received the call at 8.34 p.m., and were on the- scene a few minutes later, but the conflagration was T then too far advanced, and tho house and i- all tho contents, excepting a few things :- ih the front room, were destroyed. Tha T efforts of the brigade wore, however, so e far successful as to save an adjoining e hon=o and also one across the driTe. Of i- the "houEO itself, practically, only the o walls aro standing and those contents '• not burnt in the front room nro seri< I- ously damaged by water and smoko. s The origin of tho firo is believed .to be & due to a gas jet being too close to the '- wall paper. _ . • e The Congrats are insured in the Nor- '• wich Union Office, it is understood, for .£350. Particulars of the insurances on the building were not available last L " Great assistance was rendered to the j brigade by a party of bluejackets, who „ hasetned to tlie fire, while a troup o£ . Boy Scouts assisted the police in keeping ' back the crowd. .■.:-■-. Mrs. Evernrd was burnt about the e head in endeavouring to quell tho fire in f its incipient stage, but her injuries wero not considered serio.ua.
