GEORGE FOWLDS, LTD.
$ A" HANDSOME CITY EMPORIUM. A transformation has been effected in what was known in the old days as "Luxford's Corner," at the junction of Manners and Herbert- Streets. For many •years past the original building, long past its. time, was occupied by Chinese as a fruit and vegetable store, but in its place has now arisen a stately block of buildings. The premises hare been erected by George Fowlds, Ltd., clothier 6, hatters, and mercers, who have been established in Auckland for many years. The building has only a frontage of 22ft. to Manners Street, but to compensate for that there is a wide corner entrance and 50ft. of show windows to Herbert Street, while the depth from 'Herbert Street at the back of the section is 70ft. The firm has the very latest ideas in show windows, every inch of space being utilised by the substitution of narrow frames of polished bronze for the usual wooden frames. These, ■ together with the mirror-glass cornices and panels, make a very brilliant and attractive show. The windows are lighted by "Lux' lights without, and electric lights within, and in the "• daytime are protected from the rays of the sun with a high steel verandah, erected on the cantilever principle. The building itself is three stories high, and is finished attractively in red-dressed . brick. Only the ground noor is occupied by Geo. Fowlds, Ltd. The other floors — spacious, well-lighted, and centrally situated—are to be let. The contract for the erection of the block was carried out by. Mr. W. H. Bennett, from plans prepared by Mr. John S. Swan. The contract price was £1250.
