During the month of October building permits to the value ■ of '.£3259 were issued in Palmerston. This indicates that tile improvement in the building trade during tho past few months is being maintained. _ Tho official opening of the. Terrace End bowling green took placo afternoon in tho presence of a large number of players, including members .of i other clubs. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. R. Gardener, president. Tho tzrjils lawns were also opened at the same time, and wero well patronised. .The' second deposit of .£SO for the Pearce-Webb sculling match has been made with tho "Manawatu Standard" by . Pearce's backer, Mr. George' Seifert. The amount has been forwarded to the stakeholder at AVangauui. ■ At the ordinary meeting of tho Borough Council last night there was a considerable amount of discussion oil the questions of tho installation of a tram service and the improvement of the water supply. The majority of tho council were of opinion that tho latter was an absolute necessity, whilst the trams would be somewhat in tho nature of a luxury. At ■ a meeting of ratepayers last week, a resolution was passed requesting the council to obtain a report from an electrical engineer on the, installation of trams, anil ..at last night's meeting of the council the Mayor moved _tliat tho request of tho ratepayers be given effect to. The council, however, considered that the report, yhich it was estimated would cost .£IOO, could be quite as well supplied by the borough engineer, and so save the outlay, and the Mayor's motion was lost, . Tho discussion on the water service showed that if a dry spell occurred there was danger of the supply proving inadequate. The engineer said that two years ago, during the' dry spell which had occurred, he was of opinion that tho water ceased for a time to run over tho present dam, and with the very largo. number of connections which had siuce been made, and which were likely to be increased, there was serious danger of tho watei ceasing, ill a dry summer, to run ovei the dam. Tho present storage capacity was infinitesimal, and would quickly he com© exhausted. It was finally dccidei , to go to the ratepayers with two proposal: for loans—one to raise ,£5500 to provid< mechanical filtration, and tho other tc borrow JjGOOO to raise tho dam so as tc give adequate storage. Mr. D. Park has been elected hon secretary of the Palnierston Amateur Athletic Club, vice Mr. D. M. Robertson, wk has been transferred to tho Christehurcl: Post Office. At a special meeting of tin club last night (Mr. W. S. Dickson in. tin chair), a hearty vote of thanks was passot to Mr. Robertson for his- services to tin club, great regret being expressed at losing him.
