OCEAN MAILS AND AUCKLAND.
£ MR. GTJNSON TO THE PREMIER, .e (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) • J ' ' Auckland, November 16. * On behalf of the Auckland Chamber of it Commerce the president (Mr. J. H.' Ganv son) to-day . sent .the, following! telegram y to Sir. Joseph Ward with reference to the Vancouver mail service:— n. "With regret I note that Australia still jf opposes the inclusion of an Auckland call in new Vancouver contract, thereby jeopardising' the prospects- of same. . know and appreciate the fact that you have throughout advocated and endeavr oured ;to - secure 1 the communication of !-.. such._ Wo therefore trust.that you will, > at this juncture, exert the utmost -pressure to successfully conclude negotiations with Canada, .-.especially in view of x her j recent announcement that- New Zealand must bo included. We would suggest v that here a matter of a further five thousand or ten thousand pounds yearly !, subsidy is unimportant, and would (in •' consideration of a fine up-to-date service B affording mail - conveniences and immense l " tourist benefits) be justified.. Further, in view of the fact that the 'Frisco service !- is fixed for only twelve months (or three e months subsequent to the commencement of. the new -Vaucouver service in July) it i. would be disastrous to loso the present J; opportunity if it is a matter of -inoreas- , - ed contribution. We trust that, you will riot fail in the effort to secure this service, even apart from Australia, as a party to the contract.. It seems -that a Australia must, in any case, avail Y self of it."
