It is seldom he will find three really good animals of one type considered in relation to the whole entry. "The judgo knows that where so many factors enter into a problem it takes a diversity of type to maintain the breed. A bull may be of a very good kind' to breed heifers and quite unsuited to carrying on the male line. Without even going into the. matter so far as this ho will have to judgo between animals of a very strong type and those in which refinement has been carried so far that loss of size and robustness are evident. Take the Jersey cow at ouo end and an extrcino type of beef cow at the other and all' other cattle in between may bo said to represent those where a balance lias been struck between two extremes, whore there is no actual stable point that maintains a standard, but a fluctuating need to emphasise one side or the' other—refinement or scale, milk or beef, as the end'of all things bovine is the block. "Judges are of course elected by ringside, opinion, but they must not allow themselves to be bound by fallacious standards. They had better stay at home and- wait to be called out when the breeders, having overcomo the fanciers, insist on a truer standard for differentiating merit than to put a poor animal in the prize money just because it happens to be of the same kind as the first prize-winner though inferior to other animals of a different type in the class."
