The "Independence Beige"- protests against the reported intention of Holland to fortify Flushing, and declares that suoh a step cannot strengthen the defences of Holland. Tho paper goes on to say that "England's ability to aid us by means of the Eiver Scheldt in the event of invasion is our supreme guarantee of independence. Without this we are at the mercy of any of our neighbours desiring to violate our territory in order to reach, an adversary. Netherland has no.right to render this guarantee illusory by olosing the. Scheldt." .
