SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

CHANGE NOT WELL RECEIVED. ' Considerable • dissatisfaction exists among tho teachers of the Wellington educational district consequent upon an alteration in the regulations affecting the date on which the Christmas and. New Year vacation is to commence. Hitherto the. regulations have provided that the holidays shall begin on the Monday preceding: Christmas Day, b\it this arrangement appears to have been elastic enough to provide for the breaking-up pf the schools at least a week before Christmas Day. New , ! regulations have, however, been passed by tho board regarding the holidays, one of which provides that the schools shall break.up for tho 6ummer vacation on the Friday preceding Christmas Day. This regulation has.bseii communicated, to the teachers, who'are not at all pleased with the innovation. Some of them hold that as the schools are to break.up on Friday of ternoon, December 23, their holidays uo not. commence until tho day succeeding Boxing Day, which is practically observed on Tuesday, December 27 (tha extra day being, appended on account of Christmas Day occurring on the Sunday). They further asseverate that tho 'continuance'of school to a date so near Christmas Day will have an effect on attendances, as many of the children. and their'parents, having; a regard to tho breaking-up days in previous years, will make' arrangements to suspend their studies at least ii week before Christmas, . . <■

On being communicated with, the secre> .fairy'of the Education Board (Mr. G. L. Stewart) stated that the new roguhtion .provided for the closing of the schools on tho Friday preceding Christmas Day, but as that day ran so close to Christmas there was probably a chance of the board reconsidoring the matter.
