An announcement was made in the Roman Catholic churches of the city yesterday that his Grace Archbishop "Bed-' wood, who has been to Canada, will arrive from Sydney by the Moeraki on Wednesday morning, and that he will be accorded a reception by representatives of the clergy, and laity in. the Town Hall on Friday evening. After a formal welcome, his Grace will give a sketch of the proceedings at the Eucharistic Congress held at Montreal, at which he represented New Zsaland. He will be followed by a musical and picture entertainment, in the course of which some kinematograph pictures of the congress will bo shown, for which they are indebted to th» courtesy of tho West's Royal Pictures Proprietary.

1 Archdeacon Harper, who succeeds the Rev. G. P. Davys as vicar of St. Peter's, Wellington, . will arrive hero from Palmerston North to-morrow. The institution service will be held next Thursday evening, and will be followed by a gathering of parishioners in St. Peter's Hall, for the purpose of welcoming tha new vicar. •

Mr. J. Maughan Barnett, who is a little run down after the strenuous work attendant upon his many recent engagements, and particularly "Tho Dream of Gerontius," lias gone to Otaki for a few days' rest. Mr. T. W.'Kirk, Director of the .Orchards, Gardens, and Apiaries Division of tho Agricultural Department, who has not been enjoying the best of health, has left on a visit to Australia. He intends to make somo Departmental inquiries whilst in New South Wales. Mr. W. A. Kennedy, manager of the Union Company's Wellington branch, and Mrs. and Miss Kennedy are passengers by tho Moeraki, which left Sydney for Wollington direct on Saturday. The Rev. H. T. and Mrs. Stealey, of the Hikurangi College, Clareville, leave for Sydney on December 16, and on December 24 sail from there for the Old Country. It is somo nine years ago since Mr. Stealey visited England, and he is duo back here at the beginning of August next. During the principal's from tho collge, Mr. C. W. Lee, at present headmaster of the Martinborough State School, will be in charge. Mr. Alfred EI Dean has been appointed secretary of the Wellington Fire Underwriters' Association, vice Mr. H. M. Lyon, resigned. Mr. Lyon leaves, for Rotorua this week, where ho hopes to recuperate, his health not having been of tho best of later Mr. Raymond E. Priestley, F.G.S., geologist of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition, who takes Mr. J. Allan Thomson's place on Captain Scott's staff of scientists, is at present in Sydney.collaborating with Professor David in the geological work of tho last Antarctio Expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton, having been apprised by cable of Captain Scott's wishes, at once telegraphed nis permission for Mr. Priestley to resign from his scientific staff and join Captain Scott. Mr. Priestley left Sydney for Wellington on Saturday.

The remains of Mr. Glenallan M'Lean, son of Mr. Murdoch M'Lean, who was killed through a fall over an embankment at Otira, were brought to Wellington by the Mararoa on Saturday morning, and taken to Auckland by the Main Trunk express tho same day. The deceased, who was only 28 years of age, was a member of the firm of Morison and M'Lean, solicitors, of Wellington.

Mv. Hugo Gorlitz, Dr. Charles Harris's representative, has arrived in Wellington from a six weeks' tour of the Middle Island, where he completed arrangements for tho forthcoming British Empire Musical Festivals in connection with the visit of tho Sheffield Choir, duo here in Juno next. In September, tho Duke- of Norfolk took the Sheffield Choir, as it is constituted for the world's tour, to Dusseldorf, in Germany, to give a performance of "The Dream of Gerontius, which was so successfully produced here on Friday night. Tho choir scored a brilliant success in tho great art centre of Germany.

Inspector Ellison arrived in Wellington by the Tnkapuna yesterday morning, after an official visit to tho Marlborough district. .Mr. Goring Johnston, who was at Christchurch for tho races, arrived in Wellington ytsterday morning by tho Maori. • Tho death occurred at his residence, Hrouaham .Street, ou Saturday, .of Mv. John Pattiasoa, ated 05 years.
