WELLINGTON FRENCH CIRCLE.
ADDRESS BY MADAME BOETJFVE.
The ."Cercle Francais de Wellington" mot on Tuesday evening, the feature of the meeting being an address by Mnie. Boeufve, vrife of the French Ck)nsul of New Zealand. In the course of her remarks Jlme. Boaufve congratulated the club upon joining the.Alliance Francaise, and went on to say that, if nations gave more attention to the study of modern languages, national understandings would arise which would diminish national tendencies to settle differeiioes by recourse to war. When recently in Paris she had been delighted to observe the intelligent interest which was taken in New Zealand by tho president of the alliance and others. It had both surprised and pleased them to' learn that the acting and reading of such works as those of Moliere were not beyond 'the capabilities of New ZealandCT.s. That this could be done with perfect accent and intonation was mbro pleasing still.
M. Duflou (president of the cercle) thanked m.idamo for her address. He added that it. had been found that there were some 400 students of French in the various Wellington schools, convents, and colleges, and the matter of awarding prizes for proficiency as disclosed by examination was under consideration.
The Rev. Father Cornet, Roman Catholis missionary at Otaki, gave an interesting address on the Maoris, and, among theso who took part in the subsequent discussion, were the Hon.-John Rigg and Mr. Hudson, secretary to the cercle. Father Grognet was thanked for- his address. .
It is proposed shortly to organise a dramatic performance and concert in aid of a Frenchman (M. Maret), who has been incapacitated by a severe accident. -
