ROME AND THE VATICAN.
DIFFERENCES OF OPINION.
By Teleffrapn-Pre3S Association-Oopyrfcht. . Vienna, November • 8. A' largely-attended Christian Socialist meeting protested against certain recent utterances of the Mayor of Eome-(Sig-ner Nathan).
M. Porzer, vice-burgomaster, declared a grave.wrong had been done the Holy See when an IMian Army found courage, after the departure of the French troops, to march into. Eome. The occupation o) Eome and destruction ,'of the temporal power was a shameful blot on history, to both, those undertaking'it and those tolerating it. ' ; ,
On September 21, the fortieth . anniversary of the fall of the temporal power of the Pope, Signor Nathan, the Mayor of Home, delivered a speech which called forth a spirited protest from Pope Pius. The Pope said that Signor Nathan as a public official, was not satisfied with solemnly recalling the anniversary of the day on which the sacred rights of Pontifical sovereignty were trampled upon, but also dared to offend the doctrines of the Catholic faith, tho Vicar of Christ and the Church itself.
The Pope added: "Signbr Nathan aimed directly at our spiritual jurisdiction, denouncing . with impunity and to public contempt even the acts , of our Apostolic ministry." The letter further denounces as blasphemous the words used by Signor Nathan against the divine essence of the Church and against the veracity of its dogmas and tho authority of its Councils, offending the religious feeling of the faithful.. Against this "accumulation of impieties" the Pope indignantly protested.
