SHIPMASTER'S PAY.

INCREASES APPLIED FOR. EXTRAORDINARY ALLEGATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, November 8. The Merchant Service Guild lias applied to the Federal Arbitration Court for increased pay for masters and officers. It asks that the salaries of masters of passenger vcssols be fixed.at £26 to £50 a month, and of cargo vcssols at £25 to £39, according to classification, with other concessions in regard to allowances, hours, and duty. On behalf of the applicants the statement was made that when it was remembered that a master's responsibility extended over the whole twenty-four hours, the salary worked out at Bd. to Is. 4d. an hour; for chief officers, to Is. 5d.; and for- junior officers, to 6d. an hour. The claim also practically involves preference to members of the guild. INTIMIDATION OF WITNESSES ALLEGED. (Rec. November 8, 9.35 p.m.) Melbourne, November 8. In giving ovidence before the Federal Arbitration Court, the president of the Merchant Service Guild stated that ntombers of the guild were afraid of losing their, positions if they gave evidence in support of the demands. ..
