DISASTERS AT SEA.
WRECK OF THE PREUSSEN. By Telegraph-Press Assoclation-CopyrigM. v London, November 7. The crew' of tho five-masted German ship Preussen, wrecked yesterday near Dover, are still aboard the vessel, attempts to rescue them having been so far unsuccessful. The weather is moderating. Regardless of the' rain, crowds watched the launching of the lifeboat in a terrific sea. Tho boat was tossed about like a cork as it endeavoured unsuccessfully to effect communication with the Preussen. A tug, like tho lifeboat, was swept by enormous seas, and was unable to pass a line to tho vessel, and returned to Dover. Coastguardsmen, at great peril, descended the cliffs by means of a ropeladder, and.eventually.a rocket-line was fired from the foot of tho cliffs across the ill-fated vessel. (Rec. November 9, 1.0 a.m.) London, November 8. There is twenty feet of water in the Preussen's forehold. Efforts will be made to refloat the vessel to-day. A HEROIC RESCUE. London, November 7. The steel screw steamer Wimborne, 3466 tons gross, was wrecked at Land's End. The vessel's boats were washed away, but the crew, numbering' twenty-seven, were resetted in splendid fashion with lifer Saving apparatus. TWO OFFICERS DROWNED. London, November 7. A boat belonging to the twin-screw torpedo gunboat Gossamer capsized at Weymouth. Two officers were drowned. FOUNDERINC OF A LINER. , LOSS OF A QUARTER OF A MILLION. (Rec. The foundering of the liner Kurdistan 3063 tons gross, owned by the Hindustan Steam Shipping Company, Ltd., off the Scilly Isles, represents a loss on the insurance market of a quarter of a million.
