DURATION OF PARLIAMENT.
" REFORM SUGGESTED. The Prime Minister is being asked I by Sir W. J. Steward whether the Gov--3 eminent will take into consideration - the expediency of adding a clause to 1 the Legislature .Amendment Bill now 1 before the House; or, in the alternative, introduce a Bill, next session to' t provide that for the future the duration _ of Parliaments should bo four years inj stead of three years as at present. Sir . William Steward adds a note which ( explains that "five years having proved . too long an interval between general I elections, the experiment of. triennial [ Parliaments has been made, and has , been in operation in New Zealand for about thirty-five years. It has thus had an' ample trial, and experience has shown that it does not make for efficiency.. It is suggested that the adoption of a four years' term would enable more satisfactory ivork to be done during the life of each Parliament, while it would also effect a saving in the cost of elections, as thero would be then only three general elections in each twelve years' period instead of four as at present under the triennial system."
